Creative play at our Ajax childcare centre

At Tender Years Childcare in Ajax, creative learning is part of the childcare day. Children explore ideas through art, music, movement, stories and imaginative play, with materials and experiences suited to their age and interests.

This page explains our learning approach. It is not a separate art class or an additional enrolment program. Families choose the childcare program that fits their child's age and care needs.

Space for children's own ideas

Open-ended activities give children choices about what to make or explore. An educator might introduce a material or show how to use a tool, then leave room for a child to try an idea. The experience matters as much as the finished work.

Depending on the age group, experiences may involve drawing, painting, collage, rhythm, dance, storytelling or pretend play. Ask what children are currently exploring when you visit the room.

What learning can look like

A child may describe a drawing, choose how to join materials or work with a friend on a pretend-play idea. These moments offer opportunities for communication, coordination, decision-making and participation. Children can contribute in different ways and at their own pace.

Ontario's How Does Learning Happen? includes expression as one of its four foundations. Our play-based learning guide explains more about how everyday activities create opportunities to learn.

No. This page describes art, music, movement and imaginative play within the childcare programs. Ask about enrolment and fees for your child's age group.

Do all children make the same craft?

Open-ended experiences leave room for children's own ideas. Educators may demonstrate a technique or introduce materials, while children make choices about how they take part.

Materials and expectations are adapted to the children in the room. Younger children may explore sounds and textures, while older children may develop stories, art ideas or shared projects.

Yes. Tell educators about favourite stories, music, home languages and ways your child likes to play. Those conversations help the team understand your child and discuss experiences in the program.
